ABCB Cadetship Program

2010 ABCB CADETSHIP PROGRAM

What is the ABCB Cadetship?

The ABCB Cadetship is a 12 month government placement that offers you the opportunity to further develop your working knowledge and skills relating to the building and construction industry.

We are looking for applicants with good communication and research capabilities and strong team work skills. Given the nature of our work, the ABCB is specifically interested in applicants who have studied or worked in the following fields:

  • Building / Built Environment;
  • Building Certification /Surveying;
  • Architecture and Design; and
  • Construction Management.

The ABCB Office is based in Canberra and is a part of the Commonwealth Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR). The Cadetship Program generally commences in January for a period of 12 months, however if required, other time-periods may be negotiated.

What can we offer you?

The ABCB's Cadetship Program includes both formal and informal training and on-the-job learning. The projects that you will work on are intended to expand your skills-base and give you the opportunity to work in an environment – the Australian Public Service – that you may not previously have had the opportunity to work in.

The Australian Public Service, or APS, offers a range of benefits which will be available to you, including:

  • Flexible working hours and conditions;
  • Superannuation;
  • Ongoing training and development opportunities;
  • Annual leave;
  • Reasonable costs of relocation, which will be met if you are moving to Canberra from interstate.
What type of work will I be doing?

The Cadetship features a structured work program, with two 6-month rotations in technical areas of the office. There is a variety of projects that Cadets may be involved in during the program, so there is no typical description of day-to-day activities. However the program is designed to involve you in many aspects of the ABCB including:

  • Working with our experienced technical teams to develop and maintain the BCA;
  • Liaising with government and industry;
  • Undertaking research to identify the benefits and costs of national approaches to government directives.

Although structured, the program is flexible in allowing increased involvement in projects of particular interest to you. To find out more about current projects that the ABCB is working on, go to our Homepage, select 'What We're Doing' from the toolbar and then select 'Work Program'.

What salary will I receive?

ABCB cadets will receive a 12 month contract at the APS 3 level.  The salary currently offered at this level is approximately $47,000 + superannuation. You should find this salary very competitive with other graduate positions on offer.

Who can apply?

Whether you are about to graduate from a building / construction-related discipline and need to fulfil your course's requirement to undertake 12 months work in industry, or are a graduate with a building or construction related qualification, you will find the Cadetship a great opportunity to further your career. We also welcome applicants who have worked in building or construction and have practical industry experience.

Please note: in order to be considered for a Cadet position you must be an Australian Citizen, which is a requirement for all employees of the Australian Government. If you are unsure whether you are eligible, please speak with the Cadetship Manager.

What opportunities exist for Career Development?

This is a unique opportunity for you to develop your knowledge about Australia's built environment. You will be able to enhance your future career prospects by:

  • Working with recognised experts on building technical matters;
  • Gaining first hand experience in developing building regulations;
  • Putting your academic knowledge into practice;
  • Learning how codes, standards and public policy fit together; and
  • Seeing the building and construction industry from both a national and international perspective.

We hope that the career experience that you gain from your 12 months at the ABCB opens doors for you, irrespective of your future career path, as the skills you should learn will be valued by many employers in both the private and public sectors.

How are Cadets selected?

Applicants will be assessed on their written application, and may be selected for an interview.  Following the interview process, your nominated referees will be contacted. You will be notified about 4 weeks after the closing date as to whether you are to be interviewed or have been unsuccessful in obtaining a position on the Program.

The number of Cadet positions offered will depend on the work program for the year and the quality of applicants, but as a minimum, there will be two positions available.

How to apply

To be eligible to apply you need to meet the following criteria:

  • Have completed, or will soon complete, your studies in a building / construction related discipline or have worked in the building and construction industry;
  • Be an Australian Citizen;
  • Be prepared to relocate to Canberra in late January 2010 if you are offered a position.
