Fire Code Reform Centre (FCRC)

Background Information

Fire Code Reform Centre Limited was incorporated on 4th May 1994 as a public company limited by guarantee.

The company sought financial support for, and undertook the administration and management of, fire research projects and related activities to facilitate reform of building fire-safety regulations by the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB).

The objectives of the FCRC were to:

  • Foster the development of fire safety engineering and efficient building regulations;
  • Administer contracts for defined research and experimental testing;
  • Disseminate related information and promote unity among industry participants; and
  • Assist in the transfer of fire related technology and practice.

Support was received from all parties interested in cost-effective and efficient building fire-safety regulations. All funds where used for the purposes defined in the company's Constitution and all research outputs have been made available to the ABCB for appropriate incorporation into building regulations. At the FCRC's 6th Annual General Meeting held on 25th October 2000 it was unanimously agreed that the company be wound up voluntarily on the 30th June 2001.

To ensure the work of the FCRC continues to be influential and relevant to the building regulatory reform process in the future, the FCRC assets have been transferred to the ABCB.

Recommendations from the FCRC Research program will be considered by the ABCB, and where necessary will be incorporated into the Building Code of Australia.

All research outcomes have been placed on the ABCB website thus giving a significant return to the fire safety community.
