About the calculator

The ABCB has developed a calculator to assist practitioners in using the Deemed-to-Satisfy (DTS) elemental provisions for energy efficiency in Section 13 of the Housing Provisions. The calculator was developed in response to feedback about the DTS elemental provisions from key industry groups following the publication of NCC 2022. The overall goal of the Housing energy efficiency calculator is to help Australians build homes which are more comfortable and use less energy.

Tips for using the calculator

The calculator is a simple Excel spreadsheet which uses look-up tables to assist in applying the DTS elemental provisions to a particular house design. The calculator has been developed in the Windows ® versions of Microsoft Excel ® 2007 and above. The .xlsx file is suitable for use in the 2007 and 2010 versions of Excel for Windows and in the 2011 version of Excel for Apple Mac ®.

A number of the ABCB’s existing residential energy efficiency calculators (including external glazing, WOH energy usage and artificial lighting) have been incorporated into this new calculator. These existing calculators will still be available to download individually from the resources section.
